Yep, just do it for front end. Just switch the doctype. So that we are ready for the future.

There are basically no reason for using XHTML over HTML 4.01 already anyway, so for IE which doesn't support HTML5 yet (IE9 will), there won't be any problems anyway.

Doctype for HTML5 is <!DOCTYPE html>.
This will actually put all browsers in standards mode, even IE6.
Both <br> and <br />, well ending "/" in single tags, are correct in HTML5.

I'm with mr Xonium on this, please do not backtrack or keep it at "level" of what it is right now. Step it up even more, this will help out the templatedesigning for the whole community.
